Which Toilet is Right For You?

There are some things to consider when choosing a toilet that is right for your needs.

1. Bowl Shape: Round or Elongated?

Round Bowl Toilets

Pros:

• Compact footprint – Ideal for small bathrooms or tight spaces
• Typically less expensive
• Easier to fit in older homes with limited clearance

Cons:

• Less comfortable for some users (especially taller folks)
• Smaller seat area

Best For: Powder rooms, guest baths, tight layouts, vintage remodels

Elongated Bowl Toilets

Pros:

• More comfortable – Longer seat offers better support
• Easier to clean (less splash zone, smoother curves)
• Often more modern in appearance

Cons:

• Takes up more space (about 2″ longer)
• Slightly higher cost

Best For: Master baths, family bathrooms, new builds, comfort-focused upgrades

2. The Toilet’s Dimensions, Height and the Space it Will Occupy

• Taller toilets may feel bulkier in small bathrooms. Measure carefully to ensure the height doesn’t interfere with vanities, shelves, or wall-mounted accessories.
• The ideal clearance for a toilet is 18″ from a vanity, side wall or shower. It should be 21″ away from a wall or door at the front.
• Measure from the center of the toilet bowl (not the edge) when checking side clearance.

Note: What is a “rough in”? It is the distance from the back wall to where the toilet’s drain pipe enters the floor. Standard is 12″ but some toilets in smaller bathrooms have a 10″ and some luxury bathrooms can have a 14″ rough in.

Toilet height

• Comfort height (also called “chair height”) mimics the feel of sitting in a regular chair, which can reduce strain on knees and hips—especially helpful for older adults or anyone with joint issues.
• If you’ve got young kids, a standard-height toilet might be easier for them to use independently. For multi-generational homes, consider a height that suits the widest range of users.
• ADA-compliant toilets typically fall into the comfort height range. If accessibility is a priority, look for models labeled as ADA compliant.
• Some sleek, modern toilets offer low-profile designs that sit lower to the ground—great for minimalist aesthetics but potentially less comfortable for daily use.

3. How powerful is the toilet’s flush?

Standard modern toilets use 1.28 to 1.6 GPF. In California they require a 1.28 GPF toilet. Lower GPF saves water, but make sure it still clears the bowl effectively—look for models with high MaP scores. This independent rating system scores toilets based on how many grams of waste they can remove in a single flush. Aim for a score of 600 grams or higher for strong performance.

A well-designed bowl and a fully glazed trapway help waste exit smoothly and reduce clogs. Wider trapways (around 2 inches) are generally better.

It flushes, but what kind of flush is it?

• Gravity-fed: Uses water weight from the tank—reliable and quiet, but may lack power.
• Pressure-assisted: Uses compressed air to boost the flush—very powerful, great for high-traffic bathrooms, but noisier.
• Dual flush: Offers two flush options (light and full) for water savings, but performance can vary by model.

4. Water use and efficiency.
