Before bulding what many call a “shadowbox wood fence”, one of the most common types of wood fences out there today, you will want to mark its full layout properly. & to do this, all you need to get are some batter boards & a bit of string. Note where the fence's corners are to be located, ideally, & then, based off of that, your batter boards will get placed right in this area. Run strings along, between each of them, respectively, & then ensure that the strings remain at least 6″ away off of your property line. The overall purpose of the strings is to basically ensure that the posts get lined up properly.
The batter boards are needed for more easily adjusting the strings. Square the corners up by measuring, along a chosen string, 3 feet. Then, on another string adjacent to the one you have chosen, measure 4 feet. You should get a 5 foot diagonal between each of those points. But if such is not the case, adjust the strings on those batter boards. When building the fence, also remember to employ marking paint or stakes, in order to mark-up every post & its spacing. 6-8 ft is the typical spacing that's ideal for this, in terms of “on-center” measurements. The tape measure must be level at all times, in order to ensure a more accurate spacing, all in all. Get that amazing carpentry wood fence going!
