When repairing the front or back yard wood deck, & pulling out any nails from the inside of the wood, it is always best to have a Cat's Paw type of tool. It is entirely designed, from the very get-go, to do this sort of thing. It is a nail-puller, by nature, & one of the best a handyman can have. First, dig right into the wood with it, going in deep, with the goal of pulling out that nail head first, after you've spotted it. However, if you wish to keep that same piece of wood & re-use it later on, do not use a Cat's Paw as it will effectively mar all wood surrounding the place of the nail, making it ineffective.
When deconstructing the deck, whether all or some of it, in turn, from the piece(s) of wood pulled, follow things up with using a chainsaw. Since chainsaws are quick & effective, minimal finesse is ever required here, respectively. But too much power behind this, & it could likewise be mayhem for the entire deck.
A reciprocating saw, as well, is a handy tool to have for that reconstruction. Get a sawzall, if you want something less hazardous or aggressive. Use a blade that can cut metal, in conjunction with it, if hitting metal is a danger & risk posed with the chainsaw.
