Did you know that dirty light bulbs can give off up to 20 percent less light than clean ones? This is why it is important to clean & dust light fixtures regularly. When dust, or other particles, stand as an obstacle in the way of the bulb & its light, it makes it harder for light to come across. Makes sense, doesn't it? It's only simple logic.
To clean lampshades made of paper, fabric or silk, use a lamb's wool duster because it works better than a simple rag. The duster will attract the dirt & will not leave a residue the way a rag will. Glass shades can be cleaned slightly differently. The shade can be dipped in a plastic tub filled with soapy water. Rinse the shade thoroughly & drain onto absorbent pads. Next, to clean the actual bulbs, simply wipe them off with a soft cloth. Let things dry off properly, & dispose of any rags that have been severly dirtied. This will usually be a sign that the lampshades have not been cleaned out in quite awhile, & have accumulated much junk, some of which may tend to stick on more firmly to the bulb or lampshade over time…the longer it goes unchecked.
Lighting for Beginners
The 5 basic questions to ask to select the lighting for your home:
No matter what room you are shopping for you want your choices to not only be stylish but also illuminate the room properly. To assist in accomplishing your lighting goals, here are 5 questions to ask.
1. The type of lighting works best in the room?
It is true that any of fixtures will work in any room, it is a good idea to have a basis idea of your likes & needs. Here are some examples of what will work in different rooms. Keep in mind, you may want to make a dramatic statement & think out of the box.
ROOM | CHANDELIER | PENDANT | SCONCE | MINI-PENDANT | ISLAND/LINEAR | FLUSH | SEMI-FLUSH |
KITCHEN | X | X | X | X | X | ||
DINING | X | X | X | X | |||
BEDROOM | X | X | X | ||||
BATH | X | X | X | ||||
LIVING | X | X | X | ||||
LAUNDRY | X | X | |||||
HALL | X | ||||||
CLOSET | X | ||||||
GARAGE | X | X |
2. Determining How Much Light You Will Need
In the past, all you had to do was pick the amount of watts you wanted, 25, 40, 60, or 100 watts. Although we all knew that the higher the watts the brighter the light, what we actually seeing is lumens. To assess the lumens need for a room, take the square footage & multiply it by 40. Below is a list of square footage & how much lumens you should use.
A. 64 sq feet = 2.560 lumens
B. 100 sq feet = 4,000 lumens
C. 144 sq feet = 5760 lumens
D. 150 sq feet = 6,000 lumens
E. 225 sq feet = 9.000 lumens
3. What is the Purpose of This Room?
This may seem like an illogical question, but think beyond the name of the room. Determine the tasks you will be doing in the room, (in the kitchen you will be chopping cooking etc.) what is the best lighting for these tasks. What will bring the look I am looking for?
4. What style is the room?
Is the room traditional, transitional, modern/contemporary, rustic or arts & craft? What finishes are in the room? Although different styles & finishes may be mixed, be sure they are cohesive.
5. Is Accent Lighting the Answer?
Accent lighting will bring visual interest & some ambience to your home. Soft lighting in a bookcase or around plants gives a calming effect. Functional lighting under the kitchen cabinets will also give that soft calming effect.
Can I install light fixture myself?
The DIY lighting fixture installation you can do is go to the stores, get a precise light fixture, & get back to your home & fix it where a non-working one is. Other installations will require extra wiring, which should be done by a professional.

How do I install a ceiling light without wires?
There are alternatives to installing the lighting fixtures that wouldn't require you to hire an electrician. The options are getting lampshades & light bulbs, using plug-in pendant lights, suing plug-in wall sconces, & getting wireless LED motion sensor lights.
