No matter what material the ceiling tiles are made of-tin, uncoated, sheetrock, vinyl coated, or porous-they can all be cleaned fairly easily once a month or less. Often dust will accumulate near sources of moving air, like doors, windows and air conditioner registers.
Cleaning textured ceiling tiles:
First, dust the ceiling tiles to remove dirt particles & get rid of cobwebs using a static or feather duster to lightly clean off textured tile surfaces.
Next, vacuum the ceiling tiles as needed to remove dust particles from nooks and crannies. You can use a brush attachment & make sure to reach the corners.
If the grid is dirty wiping gently with soft, cotton towels & light cleaning solution should remove built up dirt and dust (start with the dusting, wiping down should be reserved for especially heavy build up like in a greasy environment). Ideally, a tablespoon of dishwasher liquid, along with a gallon of warm water, can go a long way & offer a great, instant clean.
For smooth surface tiles or tin plate, clean out a single tile at a time, wiping gently with soft, cotton towels & light cleaning solution (scrape off rust with steel wool if you have tin tiles).
If the grid is dirty wiping gently with soft, cotton towels & light cleaning solution should remove built up dirt and dust (start with the dusting, wiping down should be reserved for especially heavy build up like in a greasy environment).
If needed, wipe down those tiles, properly, using something like a second wet rag without any soap (that is both sufficiently clean & damp, of course) to remove residue.
If you have uncoated ceiling tiles that are lightly stained and you are trying to avoid replacement, try painting them with acoustical tile paint such as Majic's to cover up any stains. Double check once complete that all tiles are sitting down in the grid properly and remain aligned.
