Don't find out the hard way why maintenance on fences is key! A few hours a month could be the difference between a fence that last for years or a fence that needs to be replaced too soon. Every few months you should check your fence for peeling, splintering, mold or breakage. Insects pose a problem if they start to form nests in and on your fence. Also look for signs of termite damage and infestation. If you find signs of termites, then go ahead and call an exterminator.  Next, depending on the style of wood and fence, you may want to sand off rough edges or protruding fragments.  These are all things that can be done every few months and only take a few minutes.

The next few procedures may take a bit longer; however, they only need to be preformed once or twice a year. Scraping, painting and sealing can lengthen the life of your fence. Painted fences may start to look old when they start peeling and become flaky and chipped.  First, scrape away flakes and chips before painting. Then use a primer and an outdoors paint to paint the fence. Afterwards, you may want to seal the fence with a product to help preserve it.
